Liberace

Jonathan Adler, left, with Simon Doonan, Liberace the terrier and a lamp at a Florida antiques store.
‘Mwa! Mwa!’ As I arrive at his Manhattan flat, Simon Doonan is air-kissing guests goodbye, leaving me to the welcome of Liberace, his Norwich terrier, who sniffs my trousers and howls like a wolf. Doonan, the creative director of Barneys, the most fashionable department store in America, lives here with his boyfriend, the interior designer Jonathan Adler, and their home, as befits a design power couple, is extravagantly decorated. The front door opens on to a vast white room with smatterings of kitsch - a paisley Ping-Pong table, a Monty Pythonesque black rubber foot the size of a sofa, a fleamarket bust of Michael Jackson.
